It was the summer of 1985, and Charlie and Sam were both 11 years old. Despite being from opposite sides of the tracks, Charlie and Sam are best friends. Peddling along the back roads of the quiet town of Flatrock, the two plan for a summer of fun, mischief and discovery. While visiting Shephard's Creek, a scenic hangout for local children, they meet Lizzy. Energetic and pretty, the precocious girl immediately captures the boys' attention. As the trio ventures further into the natural, but treacherous, playground, life couldn't get any better for them. Then, in a split second, their lives are changed forever... And in the shadow of tragedy, the two boys learn a harsh lesson about death, abuse, and friendship. It was the summer 1985, the summer Charlie and Sam killed a girl. A novelette by Chris Hedges. Includes the bonus story “Sam I Am”.

Chris Hedges' novelette, THE CREEK, is a nicely-told "coming of age" tale concerning death, child abuse and loss of innocence. The story explores the friendship between two disparate pre-teen boys, and shows how their relationship takes a horrific downturn following the accidental death of a girl they've just befriended. Sure, most of us have read this sort of story before, but Hedges segues chillingly into uncharted territory with his disturbing and gut-wrenching view from the victim's perspective. A very well-written tale from a newish talent whose work I will be looking for from here on out.And the production qualities and design from fledgling press, Gallows Press, are superb and very affordable. Highly recommended!

The Creek Chris Hedges 9780615627427 Books Reviews
THE CREEK reminded me a lot of THE GIRL NEXT DOOR by Jack Ketchum. Don't get me wrong, THE CREEK is a very different type of tale. However, the coming-of-age story mixed with meeting a girl, not to mention the atrocities which come later... Well, I don't want to ruin the trip with spoilers, so I recommend you read it for yourself.
Chris Hedges does a remarkable job with what I believe is his debut effort. I look forward to reading more from this fine writer in the future.
